BATTOCHIO SETS RECORD, BLANKS MAVERICKS 3-0
(INDEPENDENCE, MO) – Cody Ferriero and Kevin Harvey each recorded a goal and an assist, and Danny Battochio shrugged off all 22 shots as the Rapid City Rush blanked the Missouri Mavericks by a 3-0 score at the Independence Events Center. The Sunday afternoon victory, coupled with a Wichita Thunder shootout loss earlier in the day, gave the Rush sole possession of third place in the ECHL’s Central Division standings.
It took 23:41 of hockey at the IEC, but eventually the Rush broke the scoreless draw. At 3:41 of the period, Cody Ferriero%20scored for the fourth consecutive game and 19th time this season, deflecting a shot from Sean Erickson at the point past Missouri goaltender Josh Robinson, lifting the Rush to a 1-0 lead early in the second. Kevin Harvey doubled the Rush lead moments later with his second goal in a Rush uniform, finishing a tic-tac-toe give-and-go play with Mathieu Brisebois, to 2-0 at the 10:53 mark of the second period. Towards the end of the frame, the Rush were assessed two penalties at the same time: holding to Sean Erickson and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Kevin Harvey, putting the Mavericks on a full two-minute five-on-three power play. Despite the adversity, Johan Ryd, Riley Weselowski, and Brett Kostolansky were stalwart, staving off the full two minute onslaught. Danny Battochio, Rush netminder, also made key saves in the rally as well.
Battochio held on through the remainder of regulation, and got even more insurance from Jesse Schultz. At the 11:53 mark of the final period, Schultz zipped a pass from Harvey off of a defender in front of Robinson’s net, and past the Missouri goaltender to triple the Rush lead to 3-0. At the conclusion of regulation, the Rush were victorious, 3-0, to take 5 of the possible 6 points on the road trip.
Battochio, with the shutout win (17-16-2), now holds sole possession of the Rapid City Rush single-season franchise record with his fourth of the season. Additionally, it places him in a five-way tie for first in the ECHL in that statistical category.
The Rush travel back home to take on the ECHL’s best team, the Allen Americans, kicking off a five-game homestand. The first of three matchups against their Texan rivals begins Tuesday, March 10th, at 6:35 p.m. MST at Premier Home Mortgage Ice in Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
