(RAPID CITY, SD) – The Rapid City Rush announced today a roster move ahead of their first ever appearance in the ECHL’s Kelly Cup playoffs. In order to be compliant with the ECHL’s Veteran Rule, defenseman Sean Erickson has been waived.
“This was a very difficult decision and one that wasn’t made lightly to move Sean,” said Rush General Manager and Head Coach Ferras. “In complying with the ECHL guidelines, during the regular season when you have Veteran players get injured they can be placed on 21 day IR and another veteran can be added to your active roster. This season we have had two veteran players, Riley Weselowski and Daniel Tetrault, go down with injury and as a result we added veteran Kevin Harvey to bring in much needed leadership and physicality that we were looking for.”
The ECHL states that you are allowed to carry four “veteran” players, who are players that have played over 260 games as a professional on your active roster.
“When all 16 teams put in their roster for the ECHL playoffs it can consist of only 20 active players and 3 reserve players,” continued Ferras. “ There are no IR roster spots in the playoffs and therefore only a maximum of 4 veterans can be named to the playoff roster.”
Erickson played in 67 games this season for the Rush, his second in the Black Hills, and amassed 29 points (3 goals, 26 assists), along with a +1 rating. In his two seasons with the Rush, Erickson totaled 17 goals and 58 assists for 75 points in 126 games.
The Rush conclude their regular season next week in a two-game set against the Central Division Champion Allen Americans, with the games taking place in the Allen Event Center on Thursday, April 9th, and Friday, April 10th, with the playoffs starting the week after. Be sure to cheer on the Rush as they play on the road, and secure your playoff tickets, which go on sale to the public on Wednesday, April 8th.
