(INDEPENDENCE, Mo,) – The Rapid City Rush, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, dismantled the previously undefeated Kansas City Mavericks 8-4 on Saturday night at Cable Dahmer Arena.
Rapid City opened the scoring when Logan Nelson forced a turnover and drove the length of the ice to score his first of the season. Nelson would then hit Keanu Yamamoto for Yamamoto’s second goal of the year to make it 2-0 Rush.
Unable to finish the period, Rapid City surrendered a goal in the last 30 seconds when Luke Santerno found Theo Calvas who scored on a breakaway with 13 seconds left in the opening frame.
K.C. would tie the game early in the second on a Cade Borchardt goal but less than two minutes later, Rapid City got it back on a T.J. Fergus one-timer to make it 3-2 Rush.
The Rush blitzed Mavericks starter Jack LaFontaine for goals on back-to-back shots to start the third. Blake Bennett and Brett Gravelle scored within 30 seconds of each other. Carter Robertson and Keltie Jeri-Leon would add goals on back-to-back shots in the third to stretch the Rush lead to 7-2. For Gravelle and Jeri-Leon, the markers are their first goals of the season.
While the Mavericks did score twice in the third period, the Rush would add an empty-netter from Nelson to seal the win.
The Rush are now 3-3-1 heading to Tulsa to finish the weekend against the Oilers tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is at 3:05 p.m. MT from BOK Center in Tulsa.
