RUSH END LOSING STREAK, BURN CHILL 5-1

(RAPID CITY, SD) – Eric Giosa ignited the goal lamp twice and Tim Boron stopped 32 shots as the Rapid City Rush defeated the St. Charles Chill by a 5-1 score on Monday night. The Rush dominated the game from start to finish, not relinquishing the lead once in the game, ending their franchise-long losing streak at six games.

On a pass from Jared Brown at the 6:32 mark of the first period, Eric Giosa would fire a shot that was deflected by the St. Charles defense and over the shoulder of Robert Moss to give the Rush a 1-0 lead. The Chill would out-shoot the Rush, but would be unable to get things going in the opening frame. Despite the Rush lead and dominant style of play, they would give up a five-on-three power play that would carry over into the second period.

After a major kill by the Rush penalty kill unit, the home side from the Black Hills was back on the offensive. Scoring for his second time in his last three games was Jared Brown, who scored a power play goal from the point 11:27 into the second period, giving the Rush a 2-0 lead. The power play goal was the first scored by the Rush man-advantage unit since February 8th, and gave their team a multi-goal lead in a game for the first time since January 25th. The Chill would answer moments later due to a shot deflected over Tim Boron’s shoulder from Zack Josepher, cutting the Rush lead in half to 2-1. Exactly 35 seconds later, Winston Day Chief would re-establish the two-goal lead for the Rush, finishing a brilliant pass from Jesse Schultz to give the home side a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

The Rush, a perfect 16-0-0 when leading after two periods, put that streak on the line rather early in the third, as they surrendered their second five-on-three power play of the night. Despite the minute and a half of a two-man disadvantage, the Rush killed of the danger, and added insurance to their score. Kyle Stroh scored the 12th goal of his rookie season, rifling a rebound through the five-hole of Moss to extend the Rush lead to 4-1 with 8:24 left in the third period. 54 seconds later, Eric Giosa would finish a phenomenal passing play from Brown and Kevin Harvey, finishing a back-handed attempt over a diving Moss to score his second goal of the night, as well as give the Rush a 5-1 lead that they would carry to the end of the game, ending their losing streak at six games.

Tim Boron stopped 33 shots in his 21st win of the year (21-10-0). The win becomes Boron’s 100th career victory in the CHL, with 74 of them coming in a Rapid City Rush uniform. Rapid City ended their franchise-long losing streak at six games with the win. The Rush penalty kill did not allow a power play goal for the first time since last Wednesday against Tulsa, holding the Chill to an 0/6 power play, including two five-on-three advantages turned aside. Jared Brown recorded a three point night, scoring a power play goal with two assists, and Eric Giosa scored two goals for his third multi-goal performance of the year, and is now on a three-game point streak which has seen him score three goals and add an assist for four points. The Rush are back in action at home this weekend against the Arizona Sundogs, playing in a two-game set starting Friday night at 7:05 MST.
