RUSH ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: ADAM VAY

RUSH ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: ADAM VAY

As we continue to highlight Rush alums who have made their marks in their careers since their time in Rapid City, both on and off the ice, our next edition takes us overseas.

The only Hungarian player in Rush history, Adam Vay spent four years of his lengthy—and ongoing—career in North America. After two seasons of junior hockey in El Paso, Texas, Vay returned to the U.S. as a professional and spent two years in the Minnesota Wild organization. The 6-foot-5 goaltender started with the Quad City Mallards, then moved over to Rapid City when the Rush became affiliated with Minnesota.

In 35 games during the 2017-18 season, Vay performed to a 3.29 goals-against average and led all goalies in games played.

Vay continues to represent his home country in international competition, having done so in five separate years since turning pro. Last year, he backstopped Hungary in Olympic Games qualifying competition and in the World Championships, where he faced the United States in one of his starts.

Now 31 years old, Vay is set to begin his third straight season in Slovakia with HK Poprad.

What do you remember the most about living and playing here in Rapid City?

“I had a good time over there. It was a good memory for me. I really liked the fans. They were so loud, and I learned a lot about American hockey. I really liked the place and we built up a really good community. It was fun to see Mount Rushmore and Bear Country USA. My wife and I enjoyed our time in Rapid City.”

What are the differences you see between playing in the ECHL and over in Europe?

“The rink size is smaller, so it’s faster, stronger, harder. Also, we are allowed to fight (in North America). I enjoyed the fighting. If you had a fight over there, you get five minutes, but in Europe you can get a one-game suspension. I think that isn’t right because hockey needs to be a show for the fans. It’s a part of the game.”

How popular is hockey in Hungary?

“It’s getting bigger. It’s getting popular now. We are staying in Group A, so that’s a huge point for us. I see hockey getting bigger and bigger in Hungary.”

You have been able to represent Hungary internationally for a while. How cool is it to put on your country’s sweater?

“It is very cool. Honestly, I think about it and I get (goosebumps). I was so happy to play against the U.S., against the Czech Republic, against the hard teams. Man, they are so good. Nothing we can do about it; they are really good. It was good to represent Hungary.”
