RUSH EARN A HARD-FOUGHT POINT IN SHOOTOUT LOSS TO MALLARDS

(RAPID CITY, SD) – The Rapid City Rush and Quad City Mallards collided on the ice for a Teddy Bear Toss showdown on Saturday night. With renewed confidence, the Rush looked to continue their positive ways on the ice, but the Mallards would edge out a point. Behind rookie Joe Perry’s two goals, including the game-winner in the shootout, the Mallards ended their six-game losing streak, and took a 3-2 victory against the Rush.

Two nights in a row it was “déjà vu all over again.” The Mallards jumped out first, this time 10:1 5 into the game with Joe Perry putting the visitors up 1-0 on a turnaround shot in the slot. Moments later, Johan Ryd triggered a shower of teddy bears and tied the game two nights in a row in the first period, equalizing the game at 1-1 with 4:20 left in the opening frame, a score that would carry into the middle act of the performance.

The Mallards jumped back on top in the second just 5:42 into the second. On an awkward bounce off the kick plate due to a Justin Fox shot. It went off of a diving Landon Oslanski and in, giving the Mallards a 2-1 advantage. Later in the frame, the Rush would receive a second power play and capitalize on the advantage. Taking a Landon Oslanski pass was Daniel Tetrault, who unloaded a bomb to Parker Milner’s net in the top shelf to even the game again heading into the third. A scoreless third period with countless opportunities for either side led to extra-curricular activity, which would provide the sellout crowd at Premier Home Mortgage Ice and Rushmore Plaza Civic Center with an entertaining extra five minutes. That too would prove to be not enough, and a shootout would commence shortly after.

After both teams went scoreless in the first two rounds, former Rush forward Logan Nelson got the visitors on the board. J.P. Chabot immediately countered for the Rush, but Joe Perry (eventually game-winner) and Nick Grasso would score on their shots, leading to a 3-2 Mallards win, ending their losing streak at 6 games.

Danny Battochio receives his second shootout loss of the year in his fifteenth appearance (5-8-2). Johan Ryd scored in his second straight game, tying the game again in the first period. Also getting on the scoresheet was the Rush power play, scoring for a second straight night on their second power play thanks to Daniel Tetrault, whose third goal of the season is second amongst Rush defensemen to Landon Oslanski’s four. The Rush hit the road and take on the Missouri Mavericks next Friday night at the Independence Events Center, followed by a showdown in INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita Saturday evening.
