LAST TIME OUT: Logan Nelson and Matt Marcinew each scored twice, Calder Brooks netted the game-winning goal shorthanded with less than a minute to play in the game as the Rush came from behind to beat the Idaho Steelheads 5-4 on Saturday night at The Monument Ice Arena. Rapid City erased a 3-1 deficit and now has points in five of its last six games.
WORKING FROM BEHIND: In each of their last three wins, the Rush allowed the opposition to score the game’s first goal and erased deficits en route to victory. In the 5-4 win over Idaho on Saturday, the Rush trailed 3-1 in the second period. They were down 2-0 after one in their 4-3 overtime win over Kansas City on January 16 and trailed 1-0 after one in the 3-1 win at Tulsa on January 13. Rapid City is now 7-13-0-0 when its opponent scores first.
BEAR HUNTING: The Rush and Grizzlies are set to meet three times this week with games scheduled on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in West Valley City. Rapid City is 3-2-0-0 against Utah this season including a 1-1-0-0 mark at Maverik Center. Matt Marcinew leads the Rush with six points against Utah and Max Coatta has five goals. Coatta’s five goals against the Grizzlies have all been scored in the last two games the teams have played against each other. He had a hat trick in the 6-4 loss on January 6 and two goals including the game-winner in the 3-2 overtime win on January 7.
IMPROVEMENT IN NET: Rush goaltender Adam Carlson started the season with a 1-7-0-0 record but has now won each of his last three starts. In those three outings, Carlson has a 2.27 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. He has raised his save percentage 19 points from .862 to .881 and lowered his GAA from 4.20 to 3.65.
AND IN THEIR NET: Utah goaltender Trent Miner was named ECHL Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday. In three appearances, Miner went 3-0-0-0 with a 0.67 goals against average and a .984 save percentage. Former Rush goaltender Lukas Parik is on the Grizzlies roster and in 10 games is 3-7-0-0 with a 3.31 GAA and a .905 save percentage.
ODDS AND ENDS: Utah has only played 14 games at home as opposed to 23 on the road thus far this season. The Grizzlies are 6-8-0-0 on home ice...in his last seven games, Max Coatta has five goals, six assists and a +7 plus/minus. Through his first 32 he had four goals, eight assists and a –3 plus/minus...Rapid City will play its next five games on the road. The Rush are 8-11-1-0 in away games this season...Calder Brooks’ shorthanded, game-winning goal on Saturday was the second shorthanded goal the Rush have scored this season.
UP NEXT: The Rush and Grizzlies will take Thursday off before squaring off again on Friday night. Puck drop at Maverik Center is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
