(RAPID CITY, S.D.) – The Rapid City Rush, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, announced Friday the acquisition of rights to defenseman Will Riedell in a trade with the Savannah Ghost Pirates.
“We’re excited to have Will’s rights here in Rapid City,” said GM/Head Coach Scott Burt. “He played almost all year in San Jose last season and the opportunity to have him in a Rush jersey is massive for us. Obviously, he’ll test for an American League spot, but if he’s in the ECHL we’ll be excited to welcome him.”
The Rush have traded a player to be named later to Savannah in exchange for Riedell’s rights. All futures trades will be completed before the end of the 2023-24 regular season.
Riedell, 26, from Greensboro, North Carolina, was only a first-year pro a year ago. He skated 32 games for the AHL's San Jose Barracuda last season and scored a pair of goals while adding three assists. In his time with Savannah last year, he logged four assists and a sparkling +4 plus-minus rating.
In college, Riedell played 138 games for Lake Superior State University but transferred during his last year of collegiate eligibility to Ohio State, where he was named team captain and tallied 10 points (3g-7a) in 33 games. Collectively, he finished his college career with 61 points (20g-41a), but his best stat was his +22 rating in all NCAA Division I games. Prior to his NCAA career, Riedell was a prospect in the NAHL with the Austin Bruins and New Jersey Jr. Titans. During his last season with New Jersey, he was the Titans captain and enjoyed the most productive season of his career with eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points.
