(RAPID CITY, S.D.)—The Rapid City Rush (3-2-0) fell to the Kansas City Mavericks (2-3-0) in the series finale, 3-2, on Slumberland Furniture Ice at The Monument Ice Arena on Saturday.
Lucas Sowder scored the eventual game-winning goal by pushing home a rebound from Alex Swetlikoff’s wrist shot with 7:34 remaining in the third period.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first, despite both sides recording double-digit shots on goal. The Mavericks struck in rapid succession early in the second, with Ryan Lautenbach and Nolan Walker scoring on consecutive shots to go up 2-0.
Rapid City used their special teams to respond. Ryan Mahshie punched home a puck that was kicked at the side of the net on a power play later in the second.
Then, while killing a penalty early in the third, Quinn Olson broke up the Mavericks’ power play, raced down the ice, and tucked a shot home on the short side to tie the game. The Rush have scored two shorthanded goals over the last three games.
Sowder’s go-ahead goal stood as the game-winner, but not without plenty of Rush chances; Rapid City spent the final 2:48 of regulation at either 5-on-4 or 6-on-5, and totaled 41 shots on goal in the game.
In his first professional start, Shane Farkas stood strong in defeat, making 30 saves on 33 shots and earning second star of the game honors. Logan Terness made 39 stops in the win.
Rapid City edges out Kansas City in the five-game series, three games to two. The teams will meet for one final series in January in Missouri.
The Rush begin a stretch of five consecutive road games in New Mexico and Idaho, starting next Friday against the New Mexico Goatheads
Next game: Friday, October 30 at New Mexico. 7:00 p.m. MDT puck drop from Rio Rancho Events Center.
