(CORALVILLE, IOWA) – The Rapid City Rush, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, downed the Iowa Heartlanders 4-3 in overtime on Friday night in Coralville.
Mark Duarte opened the scoring with his second professional goal, this one on the powerplay, 9:45 into the first period.
The Rush would surrender a goal to Pavel Novak just three minutes later after Jesse Jacques factored an assist. Jacques, who had two helpers tonight, has now earned a point on four of the five Iowa goals this season.
The game would go on to include two penalty shots, a near high-stick goal, and a wealth of chances for both sides. Alex Aleardi scored on the first penalty shot just 1:50 into the second period to make it 2-1 Rush. Jacques failed to score on what would have been a go-ahead goal with under three minutes left in the third period.
Liam Coughlin tied the game with his first goal of the season, batting a puck out of the air after it had ricocheted off the end glass. The goal was not reviewed.
In the third period, Novak scored halfway into the frame to send Iowa to their first lead of the season, but Jarrod Gourley would tie the game four minutes later on a shot deflected by an Iowa stick.
Connor Murphy and Peyton Jones traded saves to end regulation. Murphy, who would earn his first professional win, made 25 saves in the win. Jones made 24 saves.
Just 1:20 into overtime Jarrod Gourley deked to his backhand to bury a feed from Brett Gravelle and earn the bonus point for Rapid City.
The Rush are now 2-0-0 on the season while Iowa falls to 0-1-1. Rapid City will next take the ice on Friday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. MT against the Kansas City Mavericks. Tickets are available for the home opener at rapidcityrush.com.
